Teacher: Dr. Leena Mäkelä

Date of Observation: 02-03-2015

This observation was very interesting. This may be the best example of student-centered learning environment.

We could observe how students of media could interact with a rich learning environment. We had a class and spent all day long in Mediapolis, where is the Finnish state broadcast company, YLE.

In this campus, where YLE and TAMK act based on a partnership, university students can learn about television, cinema and media by using all the equipment related to program, movies and media production.

Students can work since first year at university and practice all the subjects they learn interacting with the learning environment. They also interact with YLE professionals, witch could be very a interesting experience. They also share responsibilities by using and taking care of equipment. We have asked to teachers how do they act related to equipment and the answer was that the equipment is a very important part of learning, as well as the environment. It costs a lot for the university, but is better to invest in this instead of giving theoretical classes related to this programs, because they need

Environment: related to physical and technological environment, it can be observed that TAMK has invested in the most modern technologies related to the media, as we could see and practice in Motion Capture equipment.

Social environment: it could be observed the interaction between students, and between teacher and students. Students share responsibilities related to all subjects.

Psychological environment: different approaches are used, as problem based learning, project based learning and scaffold knowledge construction. Classrooms are organized related to the type of course and to the type of work students will do as professionals.
